Letterpress Reading Group

The Letterpress Reading Group was a research-based workshop run by Robert Hetherington at Camberwell College of Arts in the letterpress studio.

During the workshop we read Walter Ong’s 'Orality and Literacy' and interrogated the suggestion that 'Print encourages a sense of closure[…]’ throughout the session. The approach to letterpress and the print process aimed to hold discourse and a deeper, active interrogation of the text at it’s heart.

During our discussion we set a combination of relevant passages and notes of our own – composing new thoughts directly in type as they arise. These were then combined on the press to form a new collaborative text constructed of incomplete fragments and insertions.
